OBSERVATIONS vs INFERENCES
If I say the object is an apple…. this is an inference not an observation.
The observations would be
-spherical (about 5 cm diameter)
-mass about 150 g
- surface is waxy, can be punctured with fingernail
- colour is yellow patches with red streaks running vertically with some underlying orange tints
- Shriveled green leaf-like area in central disc about 1 cm
in one end
- other end has a 2 cm, stick-like piece attached to main ball (green and brown)
Lab 1.1 Candles
Purpose – to learn how to make exact observations (not inferences) about a burning candle.
Experiment –
Data – mass and height before and after burning
Observations – about an unlit candle and about the burning process
Conclusion
What inferences can you make based only on your experimental observations.
